What Is Hypnosis?

What is hypnosis and hypnotherapy

What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is the use of hypnosis as a form of therapy, to remove unwanted emotions and behaviour which gets in the way of your life.  Problems such as anxiety, depression , panic attacks, over-eating, alcohol abuse and other emotional issues can be changed and resolved through the use of psychological techniques while under hypnosis.

So, what is hypnosis?

Hypnosis was originally named using the Greek word Hypnos, meaning sleep…..but it is definitely not sleep. It’s a state of deep relaxation, along with intense concentration and this happens using nothing more than the sound of a voice

We use our voice and carefully selected word patterns to relax clients to the point where the person’s unconscious mind can be offered positive suggestions which are solely for their benefit. From suggestions for relaxation in previously stressful situations, to “rewards” such as improved self-confidence, for ceasing unwanted behaviour i.e. to stop smoking or nail-biting

Most people don’t feel ‘hypnotised’ as there’s no such thing as a “hypnotised feeling” only a feeling of calm, restfulness; possibly the most peaceful feeling you can achieve without actually being asleep, and you may be surprised to find that you are able to talk and answer questions during therapy and that you will remember every word spoken by yourself and by us

Far from being in the therapist’s control, you are able to move around, even to stop the session and leave at any time; we couldn’t stop you doing that, however, with our support, uncomfortable emotions can be dealt with quickly and easily

Afterwards, most clients leave the office in a state of peaceful relaxation – some say that this is the most relaxed they have felt in months or even years and that feeling lasts for some time afterwards

The only time when a session would not be relaxing and calm would be during Pure Hypnoanalysis, where we are supporting clients while they release deep-seated emotions, but they will be able to shake off those feelings as they leave hypnosis and will be perfectly fine to carry on with their day and all their usual activities following a session.  We also teach techniques which will help clients to leave therapy in the clinic, rather than taking issues home with them

What does it feel like?

If you have ever returned home from work or the shops, following a well-known route and found yourself at home with little memory of the journey….that’s hypnosis. Simply relaxation, (you know where you’re going,) plus concentration (working out what to have for dinner or a work problem perhaps.)
